Our campuses are designed for closed-loop cooling. This means we do not draw water from the local aquifer, and we do not use municipal or industrial water on an ongoing basis. The same coolant recirculates inside a sealed system, again and again, instead of evaporating into the air the way older cooling towers work.

Water is trucked in for the initial fill and only occasional, small top-offs. A closed loop isn't perfectly sealed forever, so tiny, normal amounts are lost over time through pump seals, routine maintenance, and periodic water-quality testing, similar to how a car's coolant system needs the occasional top-off despite also being a closed loop. This is a small fraction of what an evaporative system loses, and nothing is discharged into the ground or local water systems.
