Next-Generation Technology: The Eden Medical Isotope Reactor

Cross River Infrastructure Partners is collaborating with Eden Radioisotopes to introduce a dedicated medical isotope reactor to the Maritimes. Unlike traditional multipurpose research reactors, the Eden reactor is optimized exclusively for medical isotope production—making it safer, smaller, and more efficient.

Key features of the Eden reactor:

  • Non-power, non-weapons reactor: Designed solely for isotope generation, with no electricity or weapons-grade byproducts.

  • Compact, high-output design: Delivers reliable isotope production with a simplified, inherently safe reactor architecture.

  • Modular, modern facility support: Paired with a state-of-the-art processing and packaging facility, enabling streamlined supply to hospitals and pharmaceutical companies.

What Are Medical Radioisotopes?

Medical radioisotopes are radioactive forms of chemical elements used widely in modern medicine for diagnosis, treatment, and research. Every year, millions of patients rely on nuclear medicine procedures to detect diseases like cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders—or to receive targeted radiotherapy treatments.

Key uses of medical isotopes include:

  • Diagnostic Imaging: Molybdenum-99/Technetium-99m, the most widely used isotope globally, enables non-invasive scans of the heart, bones, and organs.

  • Cancer Therapy: Isotopes such as Iodine-131 and Lutetium-177 are used to target and destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue.

  • Emerging Applications: Research continues into using radioisotopes for personalized medicine, radiopharmaceutical development, and theranostics—combining diagnostics and therapy into a single treatment.

Did you know? More than 40 million nuclear medicine procedures are performed globally each year, with demand rising steadily as healthcare systems expand.

A GLOBAL SHORTFALL, A REGIONAL OPPORTUNITY

Today, most medical isotopes are produced at a handful of aging reactors in Europe and Australia, many of which are scheduled for decommissioning in the next decade. At the same time, healthcare demand is skyrocketing globally, driven by an aging population, cancer prevalence, and new nuclear medicine therapies.

Without new production capacity:

  • Hospitals face supply shortages

  • Healthcare systems risk price volatility

  • Access to life-saving diagnostics and treatments is threatened

Canada, despite being an early leader in nuclear medicine, currently relies on imports for key isotopes. This project offers an opportunity to restore healthcare sovereignty and secure a domestic supply chain.

Transforming New Brunswick and the Maritimes: Healthcare, Jobs, Exports, and Education

Bringing medical isotope production to New Brunswick will generate transformative benefits for the province and the wider Atlantic region:

  • Healthcare Sovereignty: Providing hospitals across Atlantic Canada and the country with priority access to life-saving isotopes, reducing reliance on global supply chains.

  • High-Value Exports: Positioning New Brunswick as a global supplier of high-demand medical isotopes, creating export-driven revenue streams.

  • Good-Paying Jobs: Creating permanent, skilled employment opportunities in nuclear operations, life sciences, and engineering.

  • Educational Pathways: Supporting partnerships with local universities and colleges to grow expertise in reactor operations, nuclear medicine, health physics, and radiopharmaceuticals.

ENGAGING FIRST NATIONS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Cross River Infrastructure Partners is firmly committed to a collaborative, inclusive development process as we advance site selection for the isotope facility. We will engage with First Nations, local governments, and communities at every stage to ensure that:

  • Project development reflects local values and priorities

  • Opportunities for meaningful participation and shared benefit are created

  • Environmental stewardship and cultural respect are integral to our planning

As site selection advances, we remain flexible and open to dialogue, working toward a solution that best serves the region’s health, economy, and future.

BUILDING ON VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

This project reflects the bold leadership of the Province of New Brunswick in embracing new nuclear technologies as a platform for energy security, healthcare innovation, and economic growth. By supporting next-generation reactors and radioisotope production, New Brunswick is:

  • Attracting global investment

  • Developing strategic health and nuclear expertise

  • Securing a leadership position in a growing international sector
